Class of 2018
2018: A Year of Heart, Growth, and Unforgettable Adoptions
Through our trusted relationships with kennel owners, trainers, and kennel hands, 2018 brought more adoptions for friends and family. These placements were unique—not just about finding homes for retired racers but about connecting these incredible dogs with people we knew and trusted, often forming lifelong bonds.
Hoot was one of Gillian’s favourite kennel boys. At her request, the Piquette family, trainers from Steubenville and the same team behind Teddy's racing career, recommended Hoot as her next “alpha in training.” Gillian met him soon after he graduated from track school and fell in love instantly with his “huge paws and little face.” Hoot was the perfect mix of strength and sweetness and quickly became an integral part of GGA GHQ.
Clapper’s journey to GGA showcased the power of the greyhound community. Shelley, mom to GGA alumnus Albert (Alberta), helped facilitate his rescue after Clapper bit his owner and was scheduled for euthanasia. Connections were made from Florida to Alberta to Ontario, and within 24 hours, Clapper was safe at GGA GHQ. After a full decompression, assessment, and evaluation, we uncovered the root of his behaviour: an undiagnosed cruciate tear. Pain had turned this sweet boy defensive. With proper treatment, behavioural modifications, and care, Clapper emerged as a loving companion with a passion for belly rubs and white cheddar popcorn. His trainer, shocked to hear Clapper had ever been aggressive, described him as a gentle soul with over 140 races under his belt (or, rather, his muzzle).
Norman was an "OMG YES" adoption. Friends attending an educational trip to Wheeling Island Greyhound Adoption Center fell for him instantly, and Norman found his forever home.
Sunny came to us as a puppy after the Imark farm noticed a developmental difference in her behaviour. They asked, “Do you have anyone who wants a puppy?” The answer was a resounding yes! The Town family stepped up, eager to learn about raising one of these energetic “baby land sharks.”
These stories highlight what makes GGA so special: a personalized approach that respects retired greyhounds as athletes and companions, ensuring they transition into homes where they can thrive. Looking back, 2018 was a year when GGA’s heart grew even bigger. With community and compassion leading every placement, the bonds within the GGA Family only strengthened.
