2017: How It All Began: The Story of Gillian’s Greyhound Adoption
Pam, then the Adoption Coordinator at the Wheeling Island Greyhound Adoption Center (WIGAC), once said, “I need the name of your group for paperwork. How about Gillian's Greyhound Adoption?"
And with that, Gillian’s Greyhound Adoption (GGA) was officially formalized.
At the time, the GGA Family was deeply involved in fostering retired greyhounds and providing behavioural consultations to other adoption groups, both greyhound-specific and all-breed. We never imagined how much GGA would grow over the years—or the impact it would have on so many lives. Looking back, perhaps we would have chosen a different name. Gillian—not Jillian!—isn't exactly thrilled about her name being so front and center. But here we are!
Through our connections with kennel owners, trainers, and kennel hands, GGA started to organize private adoptions for friends and family. These early days were rooted in trust and collaboration with the racing community, which has always treated retired greyhounds as the athletes and companions they truly are.
Bella (Wild Bella) was Gillian's first female favourite at Steubenville. Whenever she was at the kennel, extra marshmallows would find their way into Bella's crate, and turnouts were full of lovings and pets. Bella (Ww's Bellavue) was a WIGAC perfect match for the Garand Family. Recon (Boc's Recon) was a perfect 'blind date' match for the Oliver Family, extended family members of Teddy's foster family.
From those humble beginnings, GGA has become so much more than we ever envisioned while remaining true to its core values: supporting greyhounds and their adopters, one tail wag at a time.
